National Eating Disorder Week takes place during the week of February 21 - February 27, 2022. It is an annual campaign created to educate the public about the realities of this serious condition. Its mission is to provide hope, support, and visibility to individuals and families affected by it.
Individuals of all ages can suffer from an eating disorder. Eating disorders take many forms including anorexia nervosa, binge-eating, avoidant-restrictive food intake, bulimia nervosa, and variations of these.
Parents and caregivers should especially be aware of eating disorder signs in children and teens since this is the typical age at which these disorders begin to develop. Some behavioral symptoms to watch for are:
- Increased preoccupation with weight, size, body image (may check mirror often)
- Refusal to eat certain foods, progressing to restrictions against whole categories of food
- Appearing uncomfortable eating around others
- Spending extended periods of time in the bathroom
- Skipping meals or taking smaller portions of food at regular meals
